Molybdenum Spooled Wire is available in purities from 99.8% (2N8) to 99.95% (3N5) in annealed, as-drawn, and hard tempers, with an oxide surface layer option, combining a melting point of 2617 °C and a very low coefficient of thermal expansion with good electrical and thermal conductivity of a refractory transition metal. Its primary use is as a heating element wire in vacuum and controlled-atmosphere furnaces operating up to approximately 1700 °C, where its high melting point, low vapour pressure, and resistance to creep under thermal load give it a service life that tungsten cannot match in air-containing atmospheres and that most other refractory metals cannot match in vacuum. The oxide surface layer option provides a controlled surface condition relevant to specific processing applications and affects adhesion and bonding behaviour; clean-surface wire is specified for vacuum applications where outgassing control is critical. The annealed temper supports winding and forming operations for heating element coils and mandrel wire for tungsten coil production; as-drawn and hard tempers provide the stiffness required for support structures in vacuum systems, semiconductor equipment support frames, and TIG welding electrode wire. The low CTE and high modulus of molybdenum also make it well suited to precision dimensional reference components and substrate support wire in optical and electronic systems where thermal expansion must be minimised.

Key Features

Molybdenum Spooled Wire is available in purities from 99.8% (2N8) to 99.95% (3N5) in annealed, as-drawn, and hard tempers, with an oxide surface layer option:

Melting Point 2,617 °C with Low Vapor Pressure

A melting point of 2,617 °C combined with low vapor pressure allows sustained high-temperature service in vacuum and controlled-atmosphere environments without the evaporative mass loss that limits tungsten at equivalent temperatures in non-vacuum conditions.

Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion and High Stiffness

Molybdenum’s low coefficient of thermal expansion and high elastic modulus make it well suited to dimensional reference components, substrate support structures, and glass-to-metal seal elements in optical and electronic systems where thermal expansion must be minimized.

Three Tempers for Different End Uses

The annealed temper supports winding and forming operations for heating element coils and mandrel wire. As-drawn and hard tempers provide the stiffness needed for support structures in vacuum systems, semiconductor equipment frames, and TIG welding electrode wire.

Oxide Surface Layer Option

The oxide surface layer option provides a controlled surface condition relevant to specific processing and bonding applications, affecting adhesion behavior. Clean-surface wire is the standard specification for vacuum applications where outgassing control is critical.

Good Electrical and Thermal Conductivity for a Refractory Metal

Molybdenum offers good electrical and thermal conductivity relative to other refractory metals, supporting its use as a heating element and current-carrying conductor in high-temperature apparatus where refractory character is required alongside acceptable electrical performance.

Industrial Applications

Molybdenum Spooled Wire is used across high-temperature furnace construction, vacuum equipment, semiconductor processing, and research wherever its melting point, low thermal expansion, and refractory character determine material selection:

✦ Heating Element Wire in Vacuum and Controlled-Atmosphere Furnaces
The primary application. Used as heating element wire in vacuum and controlled-atmosphere furnaces operating up to approximately 1,700 °C, where a 2,617 °C melting point, low vapor pressure, and creep resistance give it service life that most other refractory metals cannot match under these conditions.
✦ Mandrel Wire for Tungsten Coil Production
Annealed wire is used as mandrel wire in tungsten filament and coil production, where its dimensional stability at elevated temperature and compatibility with the subsequent etching or dissolution processes that remove the mandrel are both required.
✦ Support Structures in Vacuum Systems and Semiconductor Equipment
As-drawn and hard tempers are applied as support structures and frames in vacuum systems and semiconductor processing equipment, where low thermal expansion and high stiffness maintain dimensional precision at elevated process temperatures.
✦ TIG Welding Electrode Wire for Refractory Metal Joining
Used as TIG welding electrode wire for joining refractory metals, where the combination of high melting point, good electrical conductivity, and mechanical rigidity in the as-drawn or hard condition supports reliable arc welding of molybdenum, tungsten, and related alloys.
✦ Dimensional Reference Components and Glass-to-Metal Seal Elements
Applied as dimensional reference components and feedthrough elements in glass-to-metal seals, where the low coefficient of thermal expansion closely matched to certain ceramics and glasses minimizes thermally induced stress at the seal interface.
✦ Surface Science and High-Temperature Mechanical Testing
Used in research as a substrate for surface science investigations and as a model refractory metal in creep and high-temperature mechanical testing, where the wire’s well-characterized composition and the coil format provide a consistent experimental substrate.
