Polypropylene Film (PP) is a semi-crystalline polyolefin film produced by cast or biaxial orientation extrusion, combining very low density of 0.9 g/cm³, good chemical resistance across most acids, bases, and solvents, negligible moisture absorption of 0.03%, and good dielectric properties with a dielectric constant of 2.2-2.6 and dielectric strength of 30-40 kV/mm. Standard PP film achieves tensile strength of 25-40 MPa and elongation of 150-300%; biaxially oriented (BOPP) variants reach 130-300 MPa tensile strength and a tensile modulus of 2.2-4.2 GPa, significantly enhancing stiffness and barrier performance. Service temperature runs from approximately -50°C to 90-120°C. In industry, PP film is used for flexible food and pharmaceutical packaging laminates, capacitor dielectrics, medical sterilisation pouches, chemically resistant liners, battery separators, and fiber-reinforced composite prepreg release films. In research, it serves as a model semi-crystalline polymer for crystallisation kinetics, surface energy, and barrier property studies, and as a low-cost substrate for functional coating development, membrane filtration research, and electrochemical cell separator optimization.

Key Features

Polypropylene Film (PP) is a semi-crystalline polyolefin film produced by cast or biaxial orientation extrusion, combining very low density, good chemical resistance, and negligible moisture absorption:

Biaxial Orientation Dramatically Enhances Performance

Biaxially oriented BOPP variants achieve tensile strength of 130–300 MPa and tensile modulus of 2.2–4.2 GPa, dramatically exceeding standard cast PP film and significantly improving barrier performance and dimensional stability for demanding flexible packaging and capacitor dielectric applications.

Good Chemical Resistance and Negligible Moisture Absorption

Good resistance to most acids, bases, and solvents, combined with moisture absorption of only 0.03%, supports chemically resistant liner, barrier film, and battery separator applications where dimensional stability in the presence of moisture or chemical exposure is required.

Good Dielectric Properties

Dielectric constant of 2.2–2.6 and dielectric strength of 30–40 kV/mm, combined with low density and chemical resistance, qualify PP film as a standard capacitor dielectric material in energy storage applications.

Very Low Density

Density of 0.9 g/cm³ is among the lowest of any polymer film in this product family, making PP the preferred lightweight film for flexible packaging laminates and applications where mass is a design constraint.

Broad Service Temperature Range

Service range of approximately −50 °C to 90–120 °C covers most flexible packaging and industrial film applications, with medical sterilization pouch grades qualified for steam sterilization processes.

Industrial Applications

Polypropylene Film is used across food and pharmaceutical packaging, capacitor manufacturing, medical sterilization, and battery separator applications wherever low density, chemical resistance, and dielectric properties determine material selection:

Flexible Food and Pharmaceutical Packaging Laminates
Used as the primary structural and barrier layer in flexible food and pharmaceutical packaging laminates, where BOPP variants provide the tensile strength, stiffness, and barrier performance required for demanding packaging applications.
Capacitor Dielectrics
Applied as capacitor dielectric film in energy storage and power electronics applications where the dielectric constant of 2.2–2.6 and dielectric strength of 30–40 kV/mm provide reliable, low-loss electrical performance.
Medical Sterilization Pouches
Used for medical sterilization pouches where steam sterilization compatibility, chemical resistance, and heat-seal capability qualify polypropylene for sterile barrier packaging of medical devices.
Battery Separators
Applied as battery separator film in lithium-ion and other battery systems where chemical resistance to electrolyte, controlled porosity, and dimensional stability are required.
Fiber-Reinforced Composite Prepreg Release Films
Used as release films for fiber-reinforced composite prepreg manufacturing, where chemical resistance, non-stick surface properties, and process temperature compatibility support clean demolding.
Crystallization Kinetics, Membrane Filtration and Coating Research
Serves as a model semi-crystalline polymer for crystallization kinetics, surface energy, and barrier property studies, and as a low-cost substrate for functional coating development, membrane filtration research, and electrochemical cell separator optimization.
