Grade 4 Titanium Foil (Light Tight) (UNS R50700) is the strongest of the commercially pure titanium light-tight foils, combining a typical yield strength of around 480–550 MPa with a guaranteed pinhole-free structure that completely blocks visible and near-visible light transmission. Supplied to ASTM B265, it delivers this elevated strength at a density of just 4.5 g/cm³ — making it the natural choice when a light-tight metallic barrier must also carry meaningful mechanical load or resist deformation under pressure, vibration, or thermal stress. Its self-healing titanium oxide passive film provides excellent resistance to seawater, chlorides, and a wide range of aggressive chemical environments where standard stainless or aluminium light-tight foils would be inadequate, while its biocompatibility and non-magnetic character extend its utility into medical and sensitive measurement applications. The trade-off versus lower CP grades is reduced ductility and toughness, so Grade 4 light-tight foil is selected where structural rigidity matters more than cold-forming capability. Weldable by TIG and MIG with inert gas shielding. Typical applications include shielding enclosures for light-sensitive detectors in corrosive or mechanically demanding environments, rigid aperture masks and beam stops in optical and spectroscopic systems, and isolation layers in vacuum instruments where the foil must resist deformation as well as transmit zero light. In research, it is a traceable substrate wherever optical isolation and high CP titanium strength are both required.

Key Features

Grade 4 Titanium possesses a combination of material characteristics that make it particularly well suited for aerospace, biomedical, chemical processing, electronics, and energy applications:

Excellent Corrosion Resistance

Grade 4 Titanium naturally forms a stable oxide layer (TiO₂) that protects it from corrosion in aggressive environments, including seawater, chlorides, and strong acids. This makes it valuable in marine, chemical, and biomedical systems.

Highest Strength Among Commercially Pure Titanium Grades

Grade 4 Titanium offers the highest yield strength of the commercially pure titanium grades, with typical values of 480–550 MPa. This makes it the preferred choice where maximum strength is required without the addition of alloying elements, such as in structural aerospace components, high-pressure chemical plant, and demanding medical device applications.

High Melting Point (1,668 °C)

Grade 4 Titanium's high melting point ensures structural stability under extreme heat, supporting its use in high-temperature tooling, aerospace shielding, and furnace components.

Biocompatibility

Grade 4 Titanium is bioinert and non-toxic, making it ideal for long-term contact with biological tissues. Its higher strength relative to lower grades makes it particularly suited to load-bearing medical implants, dental components, and surgical instruments where mechanical performance and biocompatibility must be combined.

Weldability & Fabricability

Grade 4 Titanium is weldable by TIG, MIG, and electron beam methods with inert gas shielding. While less ductile than Grades 1 and 2, it can be formed and fabricated into precision components with appropriate tooling, supporting its use in complex assemblies across aerospace and chemical processing industries.

Surface Engineering & Oxide Layer Control

Grade 4 Titanium's surface can be engineered through anodisation or oxidation to tailor its optical, electronic, or catalytic properties — useful in sensors, coatings, and energy devices.

Industrial Applications

Grade 4 Titanium is used across high-technology sectors for its industry-leading strength among commercially pure titanium grades, combined with corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and thermal stability:

Aerospace & Propulsion Systems
Grade 4 Titanium is used in structural components, thermal shielding, and engine parts where the highest strength-to-weight ratio in the commercially pure titanium family is required. Its oxidation resistance supports long-term performance in high-altitude and space environments.
Medical & Biomedical Devices
Biocompatible and non-toxic, Grade 4 Titanium is used in load-bearing implants, dental components, surgical instruments, and biosensors where higher mechanical strength than lower CP grades is needed alongside long-term compatibility with biological tissue.
Chemical Processing & Marine Engineering
Grade 4 Titanium lines tanks, heat exchangers, and piping systems exposed to aggressive chemicals and seawater. Its resistance to chlorides and acids, combined with superior strength, ensures durability in the most demanding industrial and offshore environments.
Electronics & Semiconductor Fabrication
Used as a diffusion barrier, electrode substrate, and thin-film base layer, Grade 4 Titanium supports high-precision manufacturing in capacitors, sensors, and microelectronic devices.
Energy Storage & Conversion Systems
Grade 4 Titanium is employed in battery current collectors, fuel cell membranes, and hydrogen storage systems due to its corrosion resistance, mechanical robustness, and surface engineering potential.
Optical & Surface Coating Technologies
Grade 4 Titanium's surface can be anodised or oxidised to produce interference colours or functional coatings, making it useful in optical filters, sensors, and decorative or functional surface treatments.
