Al 1200 Aluminum Foil is a commercially pure 1xxx series aluminum foil with a minimum aluminum content of 99.0%, combining the formability, corrosion resistance, and barrier performance of the 1xxx series with slightly improved mechanical strength relative to higher-purity grades — making it a practical choice for high-volume applications where durability and cost-effectiveness take precedence over maximum conductivity. The higher permitted iron and silicon content of 1200 relative to 1050 increases solid-solution electron scattering, yielding electrical conductivity of ~55–57% IACS and thermal conductivity of ~205 W/m·K — lower than 1050 but still well above that of structural aluminum alloys. Tensile strength in the annealed condition is slightly higher than equivalent 1050 foil, and work-hardening response is more pronounced in cold-rolled tempers, providing greater stiffness for packaging and shielding applications where 1050 may be too soft. Al 1200 foil is used in flexible packaging, thermal barrier laminates, pharmaceutical and food packaging, and EMI shielding wraps where barrier integrity and mechanical durability are the primary selection criteria. In harder tempers it is used for heat exchanger fin stock and cable shielding where dimensional stability and resistance to handling damage are required. Surface quality supports use in general-purpose anodization and lacquering applications. Al 1200 is a widely used benchmark alloy in commercial-purity aluminum foil processing research.

Key Features

Al 1200 Aluminum Foil is a commercially pure 1xxx series foil with a minimum aluminum content of 99.0%, combining the formability and corrosion resistance of the 1xxx series with the greatest mechanical strength of the four 1xxx foil grades:

Electrical & Thermal Conductivity (~55–57% IACS, ~205 W/m·K)

Higher permitted Fe+Si content than 1050 increases solid-solution electron scattering, yielding electrical conductivity of ~55–57% IACS and thermal conductivity of ~205 W/m·K at a density of 2.71 g/cm³ — the lowest of the four 1xxx foil grades but well above structural alloy grades.

Highest Tensile Strength & Work-Hardening Rate of the 1xxx Foil Grades

Greater Fe+Si content gives 1200 the highest tensile strength and most pronounced work-hardening response of the four 1xxx foil grades — providing greater stiffness than 1050 at equivalent temper and improved resistance to handling damage.

Naturally Passivating Oxide Layer

The self-limiting Al₂O₃ layer provides corrosion and moisture barrier performance without surface treatment across all temper conditions.

High Ductility

High ductility supports deep drawing, lamination, and precision cutting despite the higher Fe+Si content.

Cost-Effective & Broadly Available

The standard commercial choice for high-volume foil applications where maximum conductivity is not required — broad availability and cost-effectiveness make 1200 the default grade across packaging, barrier, and shielding sectors.

Industrial Applications

Al 1200 Aluminum Foil is used across packaging, EMI shielding, heat exchanger production, and surface finishing — where mechanical durability, barrier performance, and cost-effectiveness are the primary selection criteria:

Flexible Packaging, Pharmaceutical & Food Packaging
Barrier integrity and mechanical robustness make 1200 the standard commercial grade for flexible packaging and pharmaceutical and food packaging — where 1200's additional strength over 1050 reduces pinhole formation during high-speed packaging operations.
EMI Shielding Wraps
Greater tensile strength reduces deformation and tearing in demanding EMI shielding wrap and installation operations compared to softer 1050 foil at equivalent temper.
Heat Exchanger Fin Stock
Additional stiffness reduces fin collapse under operating pressure and improves handling during assembly compared to 1050 fin stock.
General-Purpose Anodization & Lacquering
Surface quality supports standard industrial anodization and lacquering finishes for architectural, consumer goods, and functional coating applications.
Commercial-Purity 1xxx Foil Processing Research
Standard reference foil in research on commercial-purity 1xxx series thermomechanical processing, barrier performance, and conductivity.
