Copper/Nickel Cu70/Ni30 - Tube - Material Information

Copper/Nickel alloy (Cu70/Ni30) tube is a marine-grade material celebrated for its outstanding corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability in seawater environments. It has long been a material of choice for heat exchangers, condensers, and desalination systems due to its ability to maintain structural integrity under aggressive conditions.

Material Overview

Comprising 70 % copper and 30 % nickel, this alloy exhibits a uniform face-centered cubic (FCC) structure that provides high toughness and excellent resistance to seawater corrosion. The presence of nickel enhances passivation and suppresses the dissolution of copper, promoting the formation of a stable, adherent protective film composed of copper oxides and nickel-enriched compounds (Zhu & Lei, 2002). Annealed Cu–Ni tubes display optimal performance when processed at around 720 °C, achieving balanced mechanical strength, ductility, and resistance to intergranular corrosion (Mao et al., 2009). The thermal conductivity of the alloy, typically in the range of 30–50 W·m−1·K−1, ensures efficient heat exchange, making it suitable for long-term industrial use.

Applications and Advantages

Cu70/Ni30 tubes are extensively applied in shipbuilding, offshore oil platforms, power plants, and seawater desalination units. Their superior resistance to biofouling and erosion–corrosion allows prolonged exposure in high-flow marine systems. Studies show that the alloy forms protective films rich in nickel and chlorine, which continue to grow and self-heal during seawater exposure, enhancing corrosion resistance over time (Anderson et al., 2024). Furthermore, controlled annealing minimizes intergranular precipitation and grain coarsening, preventing localized corrosion even after years of service in chloride-rich waters (Lin & Zhao, 2009). The result is a tube alloy that combines high performance with reliability and ease of fabrication for industrial-scale installations.
