What are organometallics compounds?

Organometallic compounds are defined as possessing one or more chemical bonds between a carbon atom of an organic molecule and a metal. These metals can include alkaline earth, alkaline, and transition metals, as well as metalloids like selenium and boron. In most cases, the bond between the carbon and metal atoms is direct and has some degree of polarity. An organometallic complex is typically created by combining a metal-containing molecule with at least one direct, covalent bond between the metal and a carbon atom.2

One way of characterizing them is by the size of the molecule and the type of metal-carbon bonds present.

  • Most organometallic compounds are formed with bonds created when each atom contributes a pair of electrons.
  • Some are multicenter covalent bonds, where more than two atoms are involved in the coordination.
  • A third type involves ionic bonds, where one atom donates an electron pair.
Another way to characterize these compounds is by their polarity, which depends on the metal atom’s ability to attract electrons. Organometallic compounds range in polarity from highly polar, such as methylpotassium to minimally polar, such as those containing lead.
