AISI 309 Stainless Steel Foil (UNS S30900) is a high-chromium, high-nickel austenitic stainless steel foil engineered for elevated-temperature service substantially beyond the capability of standard 18-8 grades. With 22–24% chromium and 12–15% nickel, it forms a stable, adherent oxide scale under both continuous and cyclic thermal exposure, and retains meaningful mechanical strength at temperatures approaching 1000 °C. Room-temperature tensile strength of 621 MPa and elongation of 49% support good formability in the annealed condition, and the alloy is weldable by all common fusion processes. Supplied in the annealed condition across standard thicknesses and cut sizes, it is cold-formable by bending, roll forming, and drawing. Typical applications include furnace linings, heat-treatment retorts, radiant tube supports, and components exposed to hot acids, ammonia, and sulphur-bearing combustion gases where 304 and 316 grades would oxidize rapidly. In research, it provides a reproducible substrate for oxidation kinetics studies and thermal fatigue testing at intermediate-to-high service temperatures.
