2024 Aluminum Rod

2024 Aluminum Rod is a high-strength copper-magnesium heat-treatable aluminum alloy in drawn, rolled, and cold-finished bar form, containing 3.8-4.9% copper with manganese and magnesium additions, available in the T4 temper for the smallest diameter and the T351 temper across the broader diameter range. The T4 temper provides a solution heat treated and naturally aged condition with good ductility and moderate strength suited to components requiring further forming or machining. The T351 temper, solution heat treated, stress-relieved by controlled stretching, and naturally aged, delivers the same composition in a dimensionally stable, low-residual-stress condition suited to precision machined components where distortion during and after machining must be minimized. Both tempers offer the excellent fatigue resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio that have established 2024 as the reference alloy for critical aircraft structural bar stock. Natural corrosion resistance is poor, and finished components should receive a protective coating; the alloy is not suitable for fusion welding. In industry, 2024 rod is used for critical aircraft structural components, aerospace machined fittings, medical equipment frames, and high-technology components where the benchmark fatigue performance of the alloy is the primary selection driver. In research, it is used for fatigue crack growth rate measurement, damage tolerance and fracture toughness studies, corrosion and stress corrosion cracking characterization, and as the reference 2xxx series alloy for age hardening kinetics and microstructure investigations.
