Self-healing metals and the birth of stars

Welcome to our latest science and technology news roundup. We’ve picked our favourite stories from the news over the last few weeks to share with you.

Firstly, we offer congratulations to one of our collaborators, Space DOTS, for their successful seed funding bid which will enable them to revolutionise advanced materials testing in space environments. We've come across self-healing metals, an AI-enabled nose which sniffs out harmful molecules, the successful testing of a flying car and the Webb telescope capturing amazing footage of new stars being born. Plus, if you haven’t already, we’ve included our July podcast for easy listening as you head into the weekend.

UK-based Space DOTS raises $1.5M for its first-ever smartphone-sized lab for space.

Congratulations to Space DOTS, who have secured pre-seed funding to accelerate material developments beyond microgravity. We are excited to be collaborating with Space DOTS to conduct advanced material testing in a space environment. Bianca Cefalo, co-founder of Space DOTS, says they are “beyond excited for our partnership” with Goodfellow.

Scientists discover that metals heal themselves in ‘astonishing’ breakthrough

The scientists at Sandia National Laboratories have discovered a new superhero in the advanced materials world. During experiments into nanoscale fatigue cracks on metals, scientists have observed an unbelievable autonomous healing breakthrough in pure metals, defying fundamental theories and opening up a world of future possibilities.

E-nose sniffs out harmful molecules

The ‘has the milk gone bad’ sniff test is a compulsory Russian roulette in our everyday lives, but could this hazard soon become a thing of the past? Would you welcome a technology that could take this sensory risk for you? SEAS have developed an easy-to-manufacture AI-enabled sensor or e-nose to detect and identify a range of different molecules and their mixtures.

Doroni Aerospace completes first manned test flight of two-seater eVTOL in America

Flying cars have always featured in our imagination, appearing on-screen and inspiring many creative attempts over the last century. No longer a flight of fancy, flying cars are a step closer to reality following the first successful manned flight of a personal two-seater eVTOL by Doroni Aerospace in the US.

Will you be ready and willing for take-off in 2025?

Dramatic new image from Webb Space Telescope reveals the moment baby stars

Having previously worked on are born NASA projects, we are always excited to read about their latest developments. The latest James Webb Space Telescope image released by NASA is no exception, revealing the incredible finding of stars being born in the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex.
