Phynox® Spooled Wire (Co 40/Cr 20/Fe 15/Ni 15/Mo 7/Mn 2) is a beryllium-free cobalt-chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy wire in the Hard condition, spooled for precision coil spring winding, guidewire fabrication, and structural wire applications where high tensile strength, excellent fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance in physiological and chloride-containing media, and non-magnetic character are simultaneously required. The Hard condition provides the maximum cold-worked strength available in this form, with tensile strength reaching up to 2,000 MPa. Phynox® in wire form carries the same 7% molybdenum content that provides its superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance over lower-molybdenum cobalt alloys, and the same non-magnetic character (µr ≈ 1) that makes it fully MRI-compatible, both critical in wire-form components that remain implanted or are used repeatedly in the body. As a beryllium-free alloy, it addresses the occupational health requirements of high-throughput wire drawing and forming operations, and is the preferred specification for new implantable wire designs under ISO 10993 frameworks. In industry, Phynox® Spooled Wire is used for precision coil spring winding in surgical instruments, medical device delivery systems and actuation mechanisms, watch and chronometer hairspring winding, structural wire in aerospace and high-performance sensing assemblies, and guidewire and catheter structural core wire in interventional medical devices. In research, it is used for fatigue life and cyclic loading investigations of cobalt-chromium alloy wire, corrosion and ion-release studies in simulated physiological environments, and as a reference beryllium-free Co-Cr-Ni-Mo wire for wire forming process and surface preparation studies.

Key Features

Phynox® Spooled Wire (Co 40/Cr 20/Fe 15/Ni 15/Mo 7/Mn 2) is a beryllium-free cobalt-chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy wire in the Hard condition, spooled for precision coil spring winding, guidewire fabrication, and structural wire applications where high tensile strength, fatigue resistance, chloride corrosion resistance, and non-magnetic character are simultaneously required:

Hard condition providing maximum cold-worked tensile strength up to 2,000 MPa

The Hard condition provides the maximum cold-worked strength available in this wire form, with tensile strength reaching up to 2,000 MPa. This is the as-drawn condition without post-processing age hardening, and is the standard supply state for precision coil spring winding, guidewire fabrication, and structural wire applications where the wire diameter and strength are the primary mechanical specifications.

Superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in physiological and chloride environments

The same 7 % molybdenum content that distinguishes Phynox® from lower-molybdenum cobalt alloys in flat form applies in wire form, providing superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in physiological and chloride-containing environments. This is critical in wire-form components that remain implanted or are used repeatedly in contact with body fluids, where corrosion and ion release from a less resistant alloy would compromise device lifetime and biocompatibility.

Non-magnetic character for MRI-compatible wire-form components

Relative permeability μr ≈ 1 is maintained in the Hard condition, ensuring full MRI compatibility for implanted wire components and instruments introduced into the MRI environment. This is a non-negotiable requirement for guidewires, catheter structural cores, and coil spring elements in implantable devices used in MRI-guided interventions.

Beryllium-free for safe high-throughput wire drawing and forming

The beryllium-free composition addresses the occupational health requirements of high-throughput wire drawing, precision spring coiling, and guidewire fabrication operations, where repeated handling of fine wire generates metal dust and debris. This qualifies Phynox® as the preferred specification for new implantable wire designs under ISO 10993 frameworks without the additional occupational health controls required by beryllium-bearing wire alloys.

Spooled format for continuous coil spring winding and guidewire production

The spool format provides a continuous wire supply for precision coil spring winding machines and guidewire fabrication processes, enabling high-throughput production without the handling interruptions of cut-length wire stock. Spool dimensions and wire diameter tolerances are controlled to the requirements of precision winding equipment.

Industrial Applications

Phynox® Spooled Wire is specified wherever a wire-form component must simultaneously deliver high tensile strength, sustained fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance in physiological or chloride environments, and MRI compatibility: requirements that cannot be met by stainless steel wire:

✦ Precision coil spring winding in surgical instruments and medical device delivery systems
Used for precision coil spring winding in surgical instruments, medical device delivery systems, and actuation mechanisms, where the Hard condition provides maximum tensile strength for load-bearing spring elements, the spool format enables continuous production feeding, and the alloy’s corrosion resistance and non-magnetic character support use in implanted and MRI-compatible assemblies.
✦ Watch and chronometer hairspring winding
Applied as hairspring wire in mechanical watches and precision chronometers, where the combination of very high tensile strength in fine wire gauges, excellent fatigue resistance under sustained oscillation, dimensional consistency across the spool, and non-magnetic character for movement isochronism establishes Phynox® as the standard hairspring wire alloy in Swiss horology.
✦ Structural wire in aerospace and high-performance sensing assemblies
Used as structural wire in aerospace sensing assemblies and high-performance force transducers, where sustained fatigue strength under high-cycle loading, corrosion resistance in service environments, and non-magnetic character for compatibility with adjacent sensing electronics are simultaneously required and cannot be met by high-strength stainless steel wire.
✦ Guidewire and catheter structural core wire in interventional medical devices
Applied as guidewire and catheter structural core wire in interventional medical devices, where the combination of high tensile strength for pushability and torque transmission, excellent fatigue resistance for repeated bending and rotation in tortuous anatomy, corrosion resistance to body fluids, MRI compatibility, and biocompatibility under ISO 10993 are all required simultaneously.
✦ Fatigue life, corrosion, and wire forming process studies in research
Used in research for fatigue life and cyclic loading investigations of cobalt-chromium alloy wire, corrosion and ion-release studies in simulated physiological environments, and as a reference beryllium-free Co-Cr-Ni-Mo wire for wire forming process optimisation and surface preparation studies, where the consistent spool-format supply supports reproducible experimental series.
