Kapton® FN Polyimide Coil is DuPont™ Kapton® FN — a heat-sealable composite of Kapton® HN polyimide with Teflon® FEP fluorocarbon resin on one or both faces — in continuous coil form, available in 120, 150, and 200 gauge (total thicknesses of 0.030, 0.035, and 0.050 mm). The coil format feeds directly into automated slitting, winding, and tape-laying lines where uninterrupted strip length and consistent geometry across the full roll are operational necessities flat sheet cannot provide. The FEP surface bonds directly to adjacent film or copper foil under heat and pressure — no adhesive — making this the standard material for high-volume production of magnet wire insulation tape, motor slot liner strip, and transformer coil wrapping. The three gauges serve different production contexts. 120FN, with FEP on both faces, is the thinnest and most widely used for fine wire taping where minimizing insulation thickness matters. 150FN has FEP on one face only, preferred when the bonding side and the bare insulation interface serve distinct functions. 200FN is the heaviest gauge, chosen where greater mechanical stress or a thicker dielectric layer is the specification. Continuous Coil for Roll-to-Roll Processing

The coil format enables roll-to-roll processing and uninterrupted feed into automated slitting, winding, and tape-laying equipment. Consistent strip geometry across extended lengths is a production requirement that flat sheet stock cannot meet.

Adhesive-Free Heat-Seal Bonding

The FEP surface or surfaces on all gauges allow heat-seal bonding to adjacent film layers or copper foil without adhesive, at minimum film-to-film peel strengths of 700 g/in (2.7 N/cm) and film-to-copper peel strengths of 300 g/in (1.2 N/cm).

120FN (0.030 mm): FEP Both Faces, 4,200 V/mil Minimum Breakdown

At 0.030 mm total thickness, 120FN carries FEP on both faces with a minimum dielectric breakdown of 4,200 V/mil (165 kV/mm). It is the natural choice for fine wire insulation where the thinnest heat-sealable structure is preferred.

150FN (0.035 mm): FEP One Face, Asymmetric Bonding

At 0.035 mm total thickness, 150FN carries FEP on one face and suits asymmetric bonding geometries common in magnet wire taping, where one surface seals and the other presents a bare polyimide interface.

200FN (0.050 mm): Abrasion Resistance, 3,200 V/mil Minimum Breakdown

At 0.050 mm total thickness, 200FN is available in single- and double-sided FEP constructions. It delivers greater mechanical robustness and abrasion resistance with a minimum dielectric breakdown of 3,200 V/mil (126 kV/mm), suited to heavier motor and transformer winding applications.

Kapton® HN Core Properties & Certifications
