7075 Aluminium Rod

7075 Aluminium Rod is one of the highest-strength aluminium alloys in extruded and drawn bar form, an aluminium-zinc-magnesium-copper alloy containing 5.1-6.1% zinc, 2.1-2.9% magnesium, and 1.2-2.0% copper with a chromium addition, available in the T651 temper throughout the diameter range. T651, solution heat treated, stress-relieved by controlled stretching, and artificially aged to peak strength, delivers tensile strength of 440-560 MPa and yield strength of 400-500 MPa depending on diameter, with Brinell hardness of 150 HBW, combined with the dimensional stability and low residual stress that precision machined components require. The stress-relief stretching step distinguishes T651 from T6 for rod stock, minimising distortion during and after machining where material removal would otherwise uncover high residual stresses. Excellent hardness, high strength, good fatigue strength, and very good machinability make it the standard material for highly stressed aerospace structural bar stock. In industry, 7075 T651 rod is used for aircraft structural parts and fittings, military components, precision gears and shafts in motorsport, and highly stressed components in defence and aerospace systems. In research, it provides a well-characterised high-strength reference material for fatigue crack growth studies, fracture toughness characterisation, stress corrosion cracking evaluation, machinability research, and microstructure-property correlation studies in 7xxx series alloys.
