Product Summary of Silica and Fused Silica

Silica is the most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust. Silica is manufactured in several forms including fused quartz, crystal, fumed silica and fused silica.

Fused Silica glass can be produced in two basic ways, by melting silica grains either by gas or electrical heating or by synthesising the glass from chemicals. The synthetic material, normally referred to as synthetic fused silica, has better optical properties and is somewhat more expensive than the other type.

A silica glass with good thermal shock and wear resistance is also available under the trade name of Vycor. This silica glass can be more readily manufactured in a variety of shapes compared to pure fused silica.
