Lighting Up CERN

Dr Jason Jackson, Technical Specialist at Goodfellow Cambridge, explains how close collaboration helped find the elusive materials required to illuminate the emergency and evacuation tunnels for CERN. DPA finds out more…

Materials science is a critical – yet often undervalued – field that plays a fundamental role in shaping the world around us. By deepening our understanding of their properties and behaviour, we can create new materials and improve existing ones. This will empower engineers and R&D specialists to create revolutionary applications and solve ongoing issues that impact our daily lives.

It also allows sectors, such as healthcare, energy and aerospace, to introduce new technologies, with many of these focused on sustainability and protecting the planet.

One of Goodfellow Cambridge’s most high-profile interventions has been in supporting Switzerland-based CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research). The focus has been on helping it progress towards the radiation hardening of LED emergency luminaires used in the evacuation and emergency response within the accelerator tunnels.
