Grade 7 Titanium Foil (UNS R52400) is a palladium-modified commercially pure titanium, engineered for applications where exceptional resistance to crevice corrosion and reducing acid environments is the primary design requirement. The palladium addition (0.12–0.25 wt%) significantly expands the passive region of the titanium oxide surface film, delivering markedly superior performance in acidic chloride media and mildly reducing chemical streams compared to unalloyed grades. With a tensile strength of 345 MPa, yield strength of 275 MPa, and 20% elongation, it offers excellent ductility and formability alongside its corrosion credentials. Supplied to ASTM B265, it serves critical roles in chemical plant equipment, acidic process piping, marine heat exchangers, and corrosion-resistant fabrications. In laboratory and industrial research, Grade 7 foil is widely used as a reference material for electrochemical and immersion corrosion studies, and as a substrate for evaluating surface treatments and protective coatings in highly aggressive service environments.

Key Features

Grade 7 Titanium possesses a combination of material characteristics that make it particularly well suited for applications where exceptional resistance to crevice corrosion and reducing acid environments is the primary design requirement:

Superior Resistance to Crevice Corrosion & Reducing Acid Environments

The palladium addition (0.12–0.25 wt%) significantly expands the passive region of the titanium oxide surface film, delivering markedly superior performance in acidic chloride media and mildly reducing chemical streams compared to unalloyed grades. This makes Grade 7 the preferred choice where standard CP titanium grades would suffer localised attack.

Excellent Ductility & Formability (345 MPa tensile / 275 MPa yield / 20% elongation)

Despite its enhanced corrosion credentials, Grade 7 Titanium retains excellent ductility with 20% elongation, a tensile strength of 345 MPa, and a yield strength of 275 MPa. This combination allows it to be formed, drawn, and fabricated using standard techniques without sacrificing corrosion performance.

Palladium-Modified Passive Film Stability

The palladium content stabilises the TiO₂ passive film under conditions where unalloyed titanium would be vulnerable, extending reliable service life in acidic process streams, chloride-containing media, and mildly reducing environments encountered in chemical plant and marine heat exchangers.

Full Weldability (ASTM B265)

Supplied to ASTM B265, Grade 7 Titanium is fully weldable by TIG and other inert-gas shielded methods, supporting its use in fabricated chemical plant equipment, piping assemblies, and corrosion-resistant structures where joint integrity under aggressive service conditions is critical.

Reference Material for Corrosion Research

Grade 7 foil is widely used in laboratory and industrial research as a reference substrate for electrochemical and immersion corrosion studies, and for evaluating surface treatments and protective coatings in highly aggressive service environments where standard titanium grades are insufficient.

Industrial Applications

Grade 7 Titanium is used across chemical processing, marine, and research sectors where resistance to crevice corrosion and reducing acid attack is the defining performance requirement:

Chemical Plant Equipment & Acidic Process Piping
Grade 7 Titanium is the material of choice for equipment handling acidic chloride media and mildly reducing chemical streams, where its palladium-enhanced passive film provides a level of crevice and general corrosion resistance unattainable with unalloyed CP titanium grades.
Marine Heat Exchangers
Employed in heat exchanger components exposed to seawater and aggressive marine process streams, where its superior resistance to crevice corrosion under deposit and in tight geometries ensures reliable long-term performance in offshore and coastal installations.
Corrosion-Resistant Fabrications
Used in fabricated vessels, tanks, and structural parts where full weldability via GTAW/TIG and compatibility with standard forming techniques allow complex corrosion-resistant assemblies to be produced without compromising the integrity of the passive film at joints.
Electrochemical & Immersion Corrosion Research
Widely used as a reference substrate in laboratory and industrial corrosion studies, providing a reproducible, specification-controlled foil for electrochemical experiments and immersion testing in aggressive environments where standard titanium grades would not survive the test conditions.
Surface Treatment & Coating Evaluation
Used as a base substrate for evaluating surface treatments and protective coatings in highly aggressive service environments, where Grade 7's own corrosion performance sets a demanding baseline against which coating effectiveness can be reliably assessed.
