Learn more about how Phynox® compares to similar cobalt-chromium alloys.

Phynox® Coil (Co 40/Cr 20/Fe 15/Ni 15/Mo 7/Mn 2) is a beryllium-free cobalt-chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy strip supplied in the Half Hard temper, optimised for precision stamping, coil-winding, and forming operations in medical device and precision instrument manufacture. The Half Hard condition provides partial cold-work strengthening and the residual formability needed for complex spring geometries, with post-forming age hardening at approximately 500°C developing the alloy's full mechanical potential, with tensile strength up to 2,000 MPa in the peak condition. The 7% molybdenum content gives substantially better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-rich and physiological environments than lower-molybdenum cobalt alloys, which is the primary reason Phynox® has become the preferred specification for new implantable device designs in European regulated markets. Non-magnetic character across all working temperatures (µr ≈ 1) ensures full MRI compatibility, and biocompatibility under ISO 10993 is well established for this alloy class. The coil format enables continuous strip feeding into high-throughput stamping and winding lines. In industry, Phynox® Coil is used for precision stamped spring elements and coil-wound components in surgical instruments and implantable devices, watch and chronometer mainspring and regulator spring strip, pressure-sensing diaphragm spring blanks, and high-cycle instrument spring stock. In research, it serves as reference Co-Cr-Ni-Mo alloy strip for fatigue life, corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility studies under physiologically relevant loading and chemical conditions.

Key Features

Phynox® Coil (Co 40/Cr 20/Fe 15/Ni 15/Mo 7/Mn 2) is a beryllium-free cobalt-chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy strip in the Half Hard temper, supplied in coil format for continuous feeding into precision stamping, coil-winding, and forming operations in medical device and precision instrument manufacture:

Half Hard temper optimized for complex spring geometries and continuous strip feeding

The Half Hard condition provides partial cold-work strengthening with residual formability for complex spring geometries, and the coil format enables continuous strip feeding into high-throughput stamping and winding lines. After forming, age hardening at approximately 500 °C develops tensile strength up to 2,000 MPa, reaching the alloy’s full mechanical potential in the peak condition.

Superior corrosion resistance in chloride-rich and physiological environments

The 7 % molybdenum content gives substantially better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-rich and physiological environments than lower-molybdenum cobalt alloys. This is the primary reason Phynox® has become the preferred specification for new implantable device designs in European regulated markets, where the corrosion performance of the alloy directly supports device lifetime and biocompatibility dossiers.

Full MRI compatibility across all working temperatures

Non-magnetic character (μr ≈ 1) is maintained across all working temperatures, ensuring full MRI compatibility for implantable components and surgical instruments used in MRI-guided procedures. This qualification is established and does not require component-level retesting when transitioning between Phynox® strip products of the same composition and temper.

Biocompatibility under ISO 10993 for implantable device applications

Biocompatibility under ISO 10993 is well established for this alloy class. The beryllium-free composition removes the occupational health requirements associated with beryllium-bearing strip alloys during stamping, coiling, and forming operations, and is the standard specification for new implantable spring element designs requiring regulatory submission under MDR or FDA pathways.

Coil format for high-throughput stamping and winding production

The coil format provides continuous strip stock for feeding into precision stamping presses and coil-winding machines, enabling high-throughput production of spring elements, diaphragm blanks, and mainspring strips without the handling interruptions required with cut-length stock. Strip width and thickness are controlled to the tolerances required for blanking and forming to final component geometry.

Industrial Applications

Phynox® Coil is specified wherever continuous strip feeding into high-throughput stamping or winding production is required alongside the corrosion resistance, MRI compatibility, and biocompatibility of the Phynox® alloy system:

✦ Precision stamped spring elements and coil-wound components in surgical instruments and implantable devices
Used as continuous strip stock for high-volume precision stamping of spring elements and as coil-wound components in surgical instruments and implantable medical devices, where the coil format eliminates handling interruptions in continuous production lines, and the Half Hard temper provides the formability needed for complex geometries before age hardening to full strength.
✦ Watch and chronometer mainspring and regulator spring strip
Applied as mainspring and regulator spring strip in mechanical watch and precision chronometer movements, where the coil format enables continuous production feeding, high fatigue strength under sustained winding loads, dimensional consistency across the strip length, and non-magnetic character for movement accuracy are the defining selection criteria.
✦ Pressure-sensing diaphragm spring blanks
Used as strip stock for blanking pressure-sensing diaphragm springs in industrial pressure transducers, differential pressure instruments, and process control equipment, where consistent mechanical properties across the coil length ensure repeatable sensor performance after age hardening, and corrosion resistance to process fluid contact is required.
✦ High-cycle instrument spring stock in precision industrial and aerospace applications
Applied as strip stock for high-cycle instrument springs in precision industrial and aerospace sensing assemblies, where the combination of age-hardenable strength, fatigue resistance, non-magnetic character for compatibility with adjacent sensing electronics, and corrosion resistance in service environments qualifies Phynox® coil over stainless steel spring strip.
✦ Fatigue life, corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility studies in research
Used as reference Co-Cr-Ni-Mo alloy strip for fatigue life characterization, corrosion behavior studies, and biocompatibility investigations under physiologically relevant loading and chemical conditions, where the well-documented composition and the availability of a consistent coil-format supply support systematic and reproducible experimental programs.
