AISI 317LMN Stainless Steel Rod (UNS S31726) is a high-molybdenum, nitrogen-enhanced low-carbon austenitic stainless steel rod designed for process environments where 316L — and even standard 317L — no longer provide enough corrosion resistance. Molybdenum at 4.0–5.0 wt% combined with 0.10–0.20 wt% nitrogen pushes the pitting resistance equivalent well above either grade, giving reliable performance against chloride-induced pitting, crevice attack, and uniform corrosion in aggressive acidic media. The nitrogen addition also lifts mechanical properties slightly, with room-temperature yield strength of 310 MPa, tensile strength of 620 MPa, and elongation of 40%, while keeping the material easy to cold-form and fabricate. Low carbon content of ≤0.030 wt% means welded assemblies generally need no post-weld annealing, and the grade is compatible with all standard austenitic fusion processes. Typical applications include heat exchangers in chloride service, acid evaporators, reaction vessels, flue gas desulphurisation equipment, and process piping in pulp and paper or pharmaceutical production. In research, it is used as a benchmark material for evaluating the combined effect of molybdenum and nitrogen on pitting resistance in high-performance austenitic alloys.
