Commodity: Alloys Material: Stainless Steel Form: Foil/Film/Sheet Composition: Fe/Cr 22.3/Ni12.3/Mn1.5/Si.3/C/P/S Grade: AISI 309S UNS Number: S30908 Temper: As Rolled
AISI 309S Stainless Steel Foil (UNS S30908) is a low-carbon variant of AISI 309, sharing the 22–24% chromium and 12–15% nickel composition but with carbon restricted to 0.08 wt% maximum to minimize sensitization risk in welded and thermally cycled assemblies. This modification preserves intergranular corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone, making 309S the preferred choice over standard 309 wherever the component requires post-fabrication welding or will experience temperatures in the sensitization range during service. It delivers a room-temperature tensile strength of approximately 620 MPa and retains meaningful structural integrity beyond 900 °C, performing similarly to 309 in most elevated-temperature service conditions while offering significantly better weld integrity. Fully weldable by GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, SMAW, and SAW processes, it is used in furnace mesh, heat-treatment baskets, radiant tube supports, and components in hot acid and sulphur-bearing environments. In research, it provides a metallurgically stable substrate for high-temperature oxidation, sensitization kinetics, and creep studies where weld integrity is an experimental variable.

Key Features

AISI 309S Stainless Steel Foil (UNS S30908) is a low-carbon variant of AISI 309, sharing the 22-24% chromium and 12-15% nickel composition but with carbon restricted to 0.08 wt% maximum to minimize sensitization risk in welded and thermally cycled assemblies:

Minimized Sensitization Risk in Welded & Thermally Cycled Assemblies

Carbon restricted to 0.08 wt% maximum minimizes sensitization risk in welded and thermally cycled assemblies, preserving intergranular corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone.

Preferred Choice Over Standard 309 for Post-Fabrication Welding

This modification makes 309S the preferred choice over standard 309 wherever the component requires post-fabrication welding or will experience temperatures in the sensitization range during service.

Significantly Better Weld Integrity Than Standard 309

AISI 309S delivers a room-temperature tensile strength of approximately 620 MPa and retains meaningful structural integrity beyond 900 °C, performing similarly to 309 in most elevated-temperature service conditions while offering significantly better weld integrity.

Fully Weldable by GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, SMAW & SAW

Fully weldable by GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, SMAW, and SAW processes, AISI 309S supports flexible fabrication routes for furnace mesh and heat-treatment baskets.

Meaningful Structural Integrity Beyond 900 °C

Meaningful structural integrity beyond 900 °C supports reliable performance of AISI 309S Foil in components exposed to hot acid and sulfur-bearing environments.

Industrial Applications

AISI 309S Stainless Steel Foil is used across furnace, heat-treatment, and high-temperature processing sectors wherever the component requires post-fabrication welding:

Furnace Mesh
Used in furnace mesh, where significantly better weld integrity than standard 309 ensures reliable long-term performance in welded high-temperature assemblies.
Heat-Treatment Baskets
Formed into heat-treatment baskets, where meaningful structural integrity beyond 900 °C combined with full weldability by GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, SMAW, and SAW processes supports demanding fabrication and service requirements.
Radiant Tube Supports
Used as radiant tube supports, where minimized sensitization risk in welded and thermally cycled assemblies ensures intergranular corrosion resistance is preserved in the heat-affected zone.
Components in Hot Acid & Sulfur-Bearing Environments
Applied in components in hot acid and sulfur-bearing environments, where AISI 309S performs similarly to standard 309 in elevated-temperature service while offering superior weld integrity.
High-Temperature Oxidation, Sensitization Kinetics & Creep Research
Provides a metallurgically stable substrate for high-temperature oxidation, sensitization kinetics, and creep studies where weld integrity is an experimental variable.
