6061 Aluminum Rod is a medium-strength heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy in extruded and drawn bar form, containing 0.4-0.8% silicon and 0.8-1.2% magnesium alongside copper and chromium additions, available in T6 and T651 tempers. The T6 temper achieves tensile strength of 260 MPa, yield strength of 240 MPa, and Brinell hardness of 95 HBW. The T651 temper adds a controlled stretching step after solution heat treatment to relieve residual stress before ageing, producing the same peak mechanical properties in a dimensionally stable bar that minimises distortion during precision machining, making T651 the preferred condition for precision-machined components where flatness and dimensional stability after material removal are critical. Combining medium strength with good corrosion resistance, very good machinability, and good weldability, 6061 is one of the most widely used heat-treatable aluminum alloy rods across industry. In industry, it is used for rail vehicle structural profiles, aircraft structures and fittings, shipbuilding components, military components, structural pylons and towers, and general engineering machined parts. In research, 6061 rod provides a well-characterized base material for surface treatment optimisation, electrochemical characterization, machinability studies, and as a model 6xxx series alloy for precipitation hardening kinetics and mechanical property-microstructure correlation studies.
