2024 Aluminum Disk is a high-strength copper-magnesium heat-treatable aluminum alloy in precision circular geometry, containing 3.8-4.9% copper with manganese and magnesium additions, available in As Rolled condition for the thinnest gauges and the T3 temper at thicker gauges. The T3 temper, solution heat treated, cold worked, and naturally aged, achieves tensile strength of 425 MPa and yield strength of 290 MPa with 9% elongation, combining high strength with the ductility that makes it the preferred condition for fatigue-critical aerospace structures where damage tolerance is a design requirement. Excellent fatigue resistance is the defining characteristic of 2024 relative to other high-strength alloys at comparable strength levels. Natural corrosion resistance is poor, and a protective coating is recommended; the alloy is not suitable for fusion welding. In industry, 2024 disks are used as precision-machined blanks for aerospace components, medical equipment parts, and high-technology structural elements where the fatigue performance of the alloy is the primary selection driver. In research, they serve as standardised specimens for fatigue crack growth rate measurement, damage tolerance assessment, corrosion characterization, and comparative studies of naturally aged versus artificially aged temper behavior in 2xxx series alloys.
