The material we’re focusing on today is Cellulose Acetate Film, a non-petroleum-based plastic. This thermoplastic is manufactured from purified cellulose and is a transparent, amorphous, glossy material.
Cellulose Acetate Film properties
Cellulose Acetate has many desirable properties as a reasonably hard thermoplastic, making it a good replacement for other plastic products. Here are some examples:

How is it made?
Starting with Cellulose, the natural ingredient comes from two sources, which are wood pulp or cotton fibres. These raw materials are then processed using Acetic Anhydride or Acetic Acid, with Sulfuric Acid as a catalyst when cotton fibres are used.
Cellulose Acetate Film applications
This environmentally friendly alternative to non-biodegradable plastics has a wide range of applications. Originally it was introduced as a replacement for flammable celluloid in photography, yet today, we see it in a variety of formats - including thin films, thick decorative materials and as a fibre. Examples of applications include:
